CHAPEL HILL – Two Hickory High student-athletes are among 31 selected to receive “Heart of Champion” awards from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) on April 13.

Nominated by Hickory athletic director David Craft, Amy Herfurth and Ryan Nance of the Red Tornadoes were selected. They are the only student-athletes chosen for the award from the South Fork 2A, Northwestern Foothills 2A and Northwestern 3A-4A.

The awards for outstanding sportsmanship will be presented on April 13 at a luncheon at the Sheraton-Chapel Hill Hotel. They are part of the NCHSAA’s Student Services Division.

NCHSAA member schools can nominate one boy and one girl for recognition. Students must have played at least one varsity sport in the 2018-19 school year and without being ejected from any events, and they must have demonstrated outstanding citizenship and sportsmanship during their high school careers.

The students filled out an application questionnaire and then a school official, such as the principal or athletic director, also provided an evaluation.
