PEARL, Ms. — Hayden Deal ended the season as the starter on Sunday for the Mississippi Braves.
Deal, a left-hander who starred at Bandys High and Presbyterian (S.C.), went three innings in a home game the Braves won 6-4 over Montgomery (Ala.).
Mississippi did not make the playoffs in the Southern League and finished 62-74.
The start was Deal’s fourth of the season. He gave up one hit, hit a batter, walked none and struck out three.
He threw strikes on 32 of his 44 pitches, facing 11 batters as the first of six pitches used by the Braves on Sunday in 88-degree weather before 3,025 fans.
Deal, signed to a free agent contract after throwing for an Atlanta Braves scout at the Bandys field, will turn 28 on Nov. 4.
This was his fifth season in the minor leagues and another season was lost because of COVID.
