Hayden Deal pitched nearly six innings on Wednesday night and gained his first win of the season as the Mississippi Braves beat host Pensacola (Fla.) 9-4.
Deal, a lefty who was a pitching star at Bandys High and Presbyterian (S.C.) College, made his fifth start of the year.
He pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs (both earned), walking one and striking out six.
Pitching in 81 degree weather and in front of a crowd of 4,109, Deal threw strikes on 52 of his 82 pitches and faced 23 batters.
His win leaves him 1-2 this season with a 3.97 ERA, and he has 20 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings pitched.
Deal is now two wins away from 20 in his pro career (fourth on-field season). He is 18-15 with 230 strikeouts in 251 1/3 innings pitched since being signed by the Atlanta Braves on the same day he threw pitches for a scout at Bandys High’s field.
The series against Pensacola continues on Thursday night.
Deal’s sixth start of the year will depend on whether the Braves use a five or six-man rotation.
