GREENSBORO — Five star athletes from the Greater Hickory area and two of the area’s most successful basketball coaches are headed to Greensboro in July for the annual East-West All-Star games.
On Wednesday, the North Carolina Coaches Association (NCCA), game sponsors, announced rosters for the boys’ and girls’ basketball games and the boys’ soccer match and they include:
- Hickory’s Torey James and Lincoln Charter’s Kody Shubert on a 10-player West roster for boys’ basketball, as selected by West head coach Casey Rogers of Freedom and his assistant coach, Brian Carver of Enka.
- Forwards Santiago Betancourt of Hickory and Franciso Tapai of Newton-Conover and defender Jordan Hall of Lake Norman Charter on a 16-player West boys’ soccer roster as selected by West head coach Matt Parrish of Salisbury.
- Hickory’s Barbara Helms is assistant coach for the West girls’ basketball team, working with head coach Rick Anderson of Mount Tabor.
The basketball games are July 16 at the Greensboro Coliseum while the boys’ soccer match is July 17 at MacPherson Stadium at Greensboro’s Bryan Park.
Both area boys’ basketball player have signed to play in college, James recently choosing Ohio University http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/mbkb/2018-19/releases/20180516mz7z2x and Shubert committing before the season began to play this coming season at Presbyterian College http://www.gobluehose.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=18100&ATCLID=211677560e .
James averaged 21. 3 points, seven rebounds and five assists last season, helping Hickory go 13-1 in the Northwestern 3A-4A and win a regular season title and finish 27-3 overall after a fourth-round loss at Greensboro Smith.
Shubert finished with 2,487 career points, averaging 18.2 last season along with 3.4 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 2.3 steals last season. The Eagles won a South Piedmont 1A title and finished 26-5 overall, falling to Winston-Salem Prep in the West 1A Regional.
Lake Norman Charter won the state 1A title in Shubert’s junior season, and he averaged 19.1 points over a 69-game prep career.
Rogers guided Freedom to 23-4 record last season, a year ending with a second round 3A loss to Mount Tabor that left him with a 12-year coaching record – all at his alma mater – of 255-83.
Helms’ girls’ team at Hickory went 13-12, losing in the first round of the state 3A tournament at Rockingham County. She’s 415-93 in 18 years as a prep head coach and 377-56 after 15 seasons at HHS.
In soccer, Tapia led Newton-Conover to a state 2A title (27-0-2) as a senior captain, scoring 28 goals and providing 27 assists.
