SAL ALL-STARS: Trio of Crawdads, Shorebirds’ Jarrett make Northern roster

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Three Hickory Crawdads and Hickory native Zach Jarrett are headed to play in the South Atlantic League (SAL) All-Star Game in Greensboro on June 19.

League officials announced the Northern and Southern Division rosters on Tuesday, with catchers Sam Huff and Yohel Pozo and pitcher Tyler Phillips of the Crawdads on the North roster, as well as Delmarva (Md.) outfielder Zach Jarrett.

Jarrett played high school baseball at Hickory and college baseball at Charlotte.

The game on June 19 begins at 7:05 p.m. and it’s the 59th for the SAL (http://www.milb.com/content/page.jsp?ymd=20180223&content_id=267015590&fext=.jsp&sid=t477&vkey=team1).

Huff and Pozo are reserve catchers selected for the game. They have split time at catcher this season for Hickory but also played first base and been designated hitters. They’ve each caught 20 games.

POZO

Huff paces the Crawdads with 18 runs scored through Monday night. He’s also second on the team in home runs 95) and has thrown out 27 percent of runners trying to steal a base.

Pozo has a team-best 39 hits with 10 doubles through Monday, and he leads the active roster players with 19 RBIs. He has struck out just 19 times and his strikeout ratio (plate appearances/strikes out) is 9.05, second-lowest in the SAL.

Phillips is a right-hander with an ERA of 3.54 in 10 starts. He leads Hickory’s pitching staff in innings pitched (56), strikeouts (54) and leads starting pitchers with a 1.16 WHIP. In half of his starts, he has allowed no more than one run.

Phillips has walked just six this season and been especially effective at L.P. Frans Stadium (1.16 ERA in five starts, opponents hitting .221).

Jarrett had played in 51 games through Monday with a batting average .287 with 10 home runs 29 RBIs. He was tied for 18th among SAL) hitters, a league that has 12 hitting .300 or better, led by .354 by Kannapolis’ Laz Rivera through Monday.

Jarrett’s one of five SAL players with 10 or more home runs – Seuly Matias of Lexington (Ky.) has 17, Asheville’s Chad Spanberger has 14, Asheville’s Casey Golden has 12 and Jarrett and Seamus Curran of Delmarva each have 10.
