CRAWDADS: Harvey starts in Delmarva’s 1-0 victory in 14 innings

DELMARVA, Md. – Former Bandys High pitching star Hunter Harvey played a brief role Tuesday night in the Delmarva (Md.) Shorebirds’ 1-0 victory over visiting Hickory in 14 innings.

Harvey — who had been pitching for Aberdeen (Md.) since beginning his way back from Tommy John surgery — made his first start of the season for Delmarva, pitching three innings. He walked one, struck out four and threw strikes on 29 of his 41 pitches before exiting.

The fifth Shorebirds pitcher, Kory Groves, ended up with the victory after they scored a run in the 14th inning.

Gerrion Grim led off the 14th with a single and Frank Crinella came on as his pinch runner. After a wild pitch by reliever Jario Beras, Tanner Kirk walked. The Crawdads got an out on a bunt before Daniel Fajardo, who went 2-for-6, doubled in the winning run.

Despite the loss, Hickory (60-69, 33-25 second half) is still in first place in the South Atlantic League’s Northern Division. The Crawdads are tied with Greensboro (32-24), a 5-2 winner on Tuesday over Kannapolis.

West Virginia (30-27) and Hagerstown (Md.) at 29-27 are still in the race for a second-half title, 2 ½ and three games back, respectively.

West Virginia’s game with Charleston (S.C.) on Tuesday was rained out while Lakewood (N.J.) beat the Suns 3-2.

The Crawdads had five hits on Tuesday night, two by Leody Taveras and Alex Kowalczyk, Charles Leblanc and Tanner Gardner each had one.

Collin Woody was 2-for-6 for Delmarva (55-70 overall), which had nine hits, went 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left 13 on base.

Hickory left six on base and was 0-for-4 with runners in scoring postion.

The Crawdads used four pitchers with Beras (0-1) taking the loss. He pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up two hits and one run (earned).

A crowd of 2,511 witnessed the game, which took four hours, four minutes to play (with a 10-minute rain delay).

Game 2 of the series is Wednesday night in Delmarva at 7 p.m., with Game 3 starting at the same time on Thursday.

The Crawdads face Columbia, S.C., in a series at L.P. Frans Stadum that starts on Friday night.

There are 12 games left in the regular season’s second half.
