HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Bunker Hill trips Bandys in first non-league volleyball meeting

Bunker Hill High’s girls improved to 3-1 on Tuesday, beating visiting Bandys in the first non-conference volleyball meeting between the old rivals.

The Bears won 25-19, 25-15, 15-25, 25-23.

The schools are in separate leagues – the Trojans in the South Fork 2A and the Bears in the Northwestern Foothills 2A – for the first time. They were both charter members of the old Southern District 7 2A and played in the same league every year since 1959. The change in conferences came in the latest statewide realignment.

Emma Dutka had 10 kills, 14 digs and 11 assists in the loss for Bandys. Piper Rhyne added nine kills, Shi Pope had 13 digs and Caroline Mirman had 12 digs for the Trojans.

No statistical information was available for Bunker Hill.

Fred T. Foard 3, Ashbrook 0: The Tigers got 32 kills by Megan Dorsey, 17 aces by Gwyn Brooks and 42 digs by Dana Shafer to improve to 3-1 with a victory over the Green Wave in Gastonia.

Foard won 25-5, 25-7, 25-10.

The Tigers are at home on Thursday at 6 p.m., facing Newton-Conover.

Davie County 3, Alexander Central 0: The War Eagles (4-0) beat the Cougars 25-19, 25-20, 27-25 to drop Alexander Central to 3-2.

Kacey Payne had eight assists and 53 assists to spark the Cougars with Chesney Millsaps adding 12 blocks, Sage Harrington contributing 27 kills and Emma Farmer posting 51 digs.

On Monday, the Cougars beat Maiden 3-2 in Taylorsville (25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 21-25, 15-6) behind Harrington (15 kills, four blocks), Ashlee Falls (11 kills, two blocks), Payne (29 assists) and Farmer (25 digs).

Alexander Central travels to East Burke on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match.

R-S Central 3, Patton 0: The Hilltoppers won in Morganton despite three kills, five blocks and seven digs by Panthers freshman Ella Gragg.

Patton meets Freedom at Patton on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

Fred T. Foard 1, West Lincoln 1: The Tigers and Rebels played to a tie at Foard on Tuesday night.

Matt Knisley scored a first-half goal for Foard (1-0-3) and Logan Garcia had West Lincoln’s goals.

The Tigers play at Alexander Central on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and West Lincoln has a home match against Cherryville on Thursday (5 p.m.).

Watauga 3, North Buncombe 1: Jair Allvarez scored once and Sam Gagon had two assists the Pioneers, who won at home.

Watauga plays at Mooresville on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
