HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) announced on Wednesday it has signed two women’s basketball players, including a three-year varsity player from nearby South Caldwell High.

In a press release, CVCC head coach Tisha England announced her program will add Payton Kale of South Caldwell and Shamicah Sturdivant, who played at Sugar Creek Charter in Charlotte.

Kale averaged 4.8 points last season for the Spartans, who won nine games. She scored 206 points during a three-year career at South Caldwell.

“She came in and was fundamentally sound,” England said in he press release of Kale, who came to an open tryout recently at CVCC. “She worked hard, hustled and did all of the little things.

“I invited her back for another workout, and she did extremely well. I think that she’ll fit into our program really well.

“She’s a role model and a role player. It’s also great having someone locally for the support and having a great student athlete.”

Sturdivant averaged 15.2 points as a senior and scored 350 points, leading the Sugar Creek Charter’s Wildcats to a 19-5 record,

England believes Sturdivant has similar skills to graduating CVCC sophomore guard Tory Agrusa.

“She’s a tall guard who can run the floor,” England said of Sturdivant. “She can play guard and small forward. She brings a lot of athleticism to the team.

“She is very quiet and shy, but once she gets into our program, she’ll be able to bloom.”

CVCC has also signed Aniya Taylor of Chapel Hill for next season, England’s sixth as head coach.
