HICKORY – Quiet on the court, A’Liyah Woods let her play do all of the talking.

Woods, a Catawba Valley Community College sophomore from Gastonia, will continue her athletic career at Greensboro College after signing with the Pride on Wednesday.

Woods, a 5-foot-6 guard from Ashbrook High, made a vast improvement from her freshman to sophomore seasons.

After averaging 3.9 points per game in 20 games as a freshman, she started 26 of the Red Hawks’ 27 games last fall (9.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game).

“A’Liyah is probably the most improved player here in CVCC history,” Red Hawks women’s head basketball coach Tisha England said in a press release. “That lets you know that she came and worked very hard. She put the time into it and the work ethic into it. She became a phenomenal player this year.”

Woods played her best last season during Region X play, averaging 10.3 points per game. Her

top performance came in November when she scored 22 points in a 82-59 road victory at Lenoir Community College.

“Greensboro College is receiving a jewel,” England said in the press release. “She is a steal. A’Liyah can play. She’s very quick and can shoot. Each day when I see her do workouts, she’s getting better at shooting. I’m proud of her.

“Whether one person goes or nobody goes to work out, A’Liyah is going to the gym. That tells you something about her.”

CVCC finished 21-8 overall last season and 14-6 in Region X.

She is the third Red Hawks women’s player to sign since last season. The others are sophomore point guard Isehia Love with UNC Pembroke and sophomore forward Jala Daniels with Montreat.
