BOONE – Watauga High is changing head baseball coaches for the second time in four seasons.

The Pioneers have selected Chris Moore — head baseball coach the past two years at Watauga Middle School – to lead their baseball program, The Watauga Democrat and WATA Radio reported.

Moore served as in-school suspension officer at Watauga last year. He replaces David Lee, who resigned after his second season after he had replaced Pete Hardee, now head baseball coach at Alexander Central.

The Pioneers went 14-33 overall and 9-19 in Northwestern 3A-4A games under Lee the past two seasons.

In addition to coaching the middle school team the past two seasons, Moore also coached Watauga’s summer league team, The Democrat reported.

“I’m excited about it,” Moore said in The Democrat’s story. “It’s a great opportunity. Obviously to go through the (hiring) process and then be the one to lead the program is exciting…”

The story said Watauga officials indicated there were 17 applications for the open baseball position.

Other background information about Moore in The Democrat’s story said:

Moore is a former Appalachian State baseball assistant (2010-12) and held the same position from 2012-15 at Georgia Southern. He was head coach at Lander College (2005-09) before joining the Appalachian State coaching staff, and he was an assistant coach in 2009-10 at the University of West Georgia.

He began his coaching career as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Davidson (2003-05).

Moore played college baseball at Western Carolina and was drafted in the 11th round of the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft by the Colorado Rockies.

During his minor league career, he played second base, third base, shortstop, first base and was a designated hitter with Advanced Class A Salem (Va.), Class A Asheville and with the short season Portland (Ore.) Rockies.
