HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University announced Wednesday it will have a graduate assistant who played high school golf in Scotland working with its men’s and women’s golf teams this season.

Leslie Atkins, an outstanding player at the Loretto School in Edinburgh, Scotland, and also a member of the U18 Scottish National Team and the Scottish Girls Individual Champion, will assist Bears head coach Elliot Gealy with both LRU golf teams.

She graduated from the University of Louisiana at Monroe with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with an area of concentration in fitness and sports industries.

Atkins played three seasons of women’s golf for the Warhawks after transferring. She lettered one year at Florida International University (2013-14) in University Park, Fla., before going to Louisiana at Monroe.

“I am very excited to have Lesley join the men’s and women’s golf programs at Lenoir-Rhyne,” Gealy said in a press release. “She brings a wealth of high level experience on the prep and collegiate level that will be beneficial to both programs.

“Lesley has a positive attitude and energy that will help our teams continue to build on the past success of the programs.

“I look forward to watching Lesley develop our student-athletes into complete young men and women on and off the golf course.”

LRU’s fall season begins Sept. 11-12 with the men’s team playing in the Kiawah Island (S.C.) Invitational and the women playing in the Ross Resorts Invitational in Southern Pines.
