MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Red Hawks fall, will be No. 9 seed in Region X tourney

FAYETTEVILLE – Johnny Hughes and Jabaria Bowman combined for 39 points on Sunday, sparking Fayetteville Tech’s 92-87 men’s basketball win over visiting Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC).

The loss in the final game of the regular season left CVCC at 10-19 overall and 5-15 in Region X. The Red Hawks will enter the conference tournament as a No. 9 seed.

Tyrell Oglesby led the Red Hawks with a team-high 21 points on Sunday with Marcus Talley adding 16 points, Victoria Tshiona scoring 15 and and Isayah Johnson finishing with 13.

CVCC led 51-42 at halftime, but Fayetteville Tech (15-13, 11-9 in Region X) rallied in the second half, outscoring the Red Hawks 50-36 to win.

Hughes scored 20 points and Bowman added 19 to lead the Trojans. Bowman scored 14 second-half points.

CVCC’s next game, in the Region X tournament, will be in Petersburg, Va., against an opponent to be determined. The tournament begins Saturday.
