HICKORY – Freshman Isayah Johnson’s 19 points sparked Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) on Saturday in a 67-54 men’s home basketball victory over Johnston Community College in the PDQ Classic.

Playing in the Tarlton Complex, the Red Hawks improved to 5-6 with their second victory in the Classic, a two-day tournament.

CVCC trailed 10-4 in the early stages of the first half on Saturday before exploding to take a 32-22 halftime lead.

The Jaguars (1-16) used a 14-4 run at the start of the second half to tie it at 36 but got no closer.

Johnson finished by scoring 12 points in the second half.

Two other Red Hawks reached double-figure scoring, Tyrell Oglesby with 13 points and Steve Ruszala with 12.

Kenny Williams led Johnston with 11 points, while Demetrius Hall added 10 points.

CVCC’s next game is Tuesday at home, part of a doubleheader that begins at 3 p.m.
