HICKORY – Fayetteville Tech nipped Catawba Valley Community College 97-96 in men’s basketball on Saturday, leaving the Red Hawks with three straight losses.

The game at CVCC’s Tarlton Complex was tied at 85 with one minute, 45 seconds left. and the Trojans (9-5, 6-4 Region X) won by hitting free throws down the stretch after they gained a lead over the Red Hawks (6-9, 1-5).

Everett Palmer’s 3-point hit at the buzzer got CVCC within a point.

Tyrell Oglesby, a freshman from Inman, S.C., scored 22 points to lead the Red Hawks. It was his fifth 20-point game of the season.

CVCC sophomore forward Steve Ruszala had 18 of his 19 points in the second half.

Nicolas Kuhns paced Fayetteville Tech with 20 points and Jabari Bowman added 18.

The Red Hawks’ next game is Tuesday at 7 p.m against Vance-Granville Community College in Hendersonville.
