WALTERBORO, S.C. – Catawba Valley Community College had nearly a full roster on Wednesday afternoon and notched a 3-0 conference victory on the road over USC Salkehatchie,

Playing in her first game since the season opener, sophomore middle hitter Leslie Leonard tallied a team-high eight kills, while freshman Adair Melton added seven kills and four aces. Freshman Karsyn Mundy, who saw her first action of the season due to injury, added five kills.
“It was nice to have a few of our players back,” CVCC head coach Shannon Hudson said in a press release. “We had Na-Diea (Atkins) come in for the first time. We just kind of eased her into it and let her play some right side. She looked really good.

“Karsyn (Mundy) was back in the outside hitter spot. It was nice to have a few key pieces back.”
The Red Hawks had stellar play on serve — tallying 13 aces – that included a team-high five by Kara Williams and four by Katie Rupp.

Defensively at the net, captain Ramsey Fulmer registered three blocks.
CVCC rushed to a 2-0 lead by winning 25-5 and 25-3 in the first two sets.

The Redskins battled closely in the early stages of the third set before the Red Hawks won 25-12.

CVCC returns to the court on Tuesday with a road non-conference match against Spartanburg Methodist.
The Red Hawks were originally scheduled to compete at the Pasco-Hernando Bobcat Invitational in Dale City, Fla., this weekend, but it was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma.
“We were looking forward to some competition down there, but it’ll be be nice to have a few more days in practice and work on a couple of things now that we have our pieces back in place,” Hudson said in the press release. “It’s not a total loss.

“We are upset that (Hurricane) Irma has kind of interrupted our plans, but we are trying to keep things in perspective. We know a lot of people are going to be in harm’s way with the storm.

“We are definitely praying for them and for all the schools that are involved in that mess that’s going on.”
