COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Red Hawks go 4-1 at Invitational, have won 13 of last 14 matches

HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College’s women are hearing their head coach loud and clear as they head into the new week.

“They definitely lived up to the expectations,” Red Hawks head coach Shannon Hudson said in a CVCC press release after her team went 4-1 over the weekend in the fourth annual Valley Invitational. “We’ve been telling them all year that they have the talent to win, and they finally believed and trusted each other to make it happen.”

CVCC (17-7) has won 13 of its last 14 matches as it heads into a Thursday match at Division II Cleveland (Tenn.) State. The Red Hawks then play Friday at Hanceville, Ala., in the Wallace State Fall Bash, a two-day tournament, facing four Division (I foes — Spartanburg Methodist, Coastal Alabama- Bay Minette, Monroe College and host Wallace State.

During weekend action at Tarlton Complex, the Red Hawks won four of five matches:

CVCC 3, No. 6 Pasco-Hernando 0 (Saturday)

For the first time in their storied rivalry, the Red Hawks shut out the Bobcats in straight sets, 25-22, 25-21, 25-21.

The win avenged a 3-1 loss earlier this season on Sept. 8 in New Port Richey, Fla.

Emma Clark made a team-high 12 kills for CVCC, while Sage Harrington and Siena Naotala added seven and six kills, respectively.

Naotala also tallied six blocks (one solo, five assists), and Clark added four blocks (one solo, four assists), part of 18 blocks by CVCC.

The Red Hawks made 78 digs as a team, including a team-best 26 from Emily Williams, 14 from Paige Sizemore and 11 from Macy Pope.

Captains Emilee Webber and Macy Pope helped aid the offensive attack for CVCC. Webber assisted on a team-high 18 kills, while Pope assisted on 11 kills.

CVCC 3, South Florida (Saturday)

The Red Hawks capped their fourth win in the Valley Invitational with a sweep of the Panthers.

Clark had a team-high 13 kills and seven blocks.

Williams tallied 18 digs, and Webber and Pope combined for 30 of the Red Hawks’ 34 assists.

CVCC 3, Wallace State 0 (Friday)

In a back-and-forth battle against the Lions, the Red Hawks prevailed, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22.

Clark led CVCCwith 11 kills and four blocks, while Harrington and Naotala added nine and seven kills each, respectively.

The Red Hawks made 14 blocks, including four by Naotala, three by Harrington and two by Paige Sizemore.

CVCC 3, St. Johns River State 0 (Friday)

Behind a season-high 13 kills from freshman Meredith Patterson, the Red Hawks rebounded with a sweep of the Vikings, winning 25-23, 25-21, 25-15.

Clark and Harrington added 11 and seven kills each, respectively.

Williams tallied a team-high 13 digs on defense, Pope made 12 assists and 11 digs and Webber led the Red Hawks in assists with 14.

No. 2 Owens 3, CVCC 0 (Friday)

The Express swept the Red Hawks, snapping a season-high nine-game win streak, 25-19, 25-15, 25-22.

Clark led CVCC with 10 kills and five blocks, while Harrington added five kills and three blocks.

Williams made 16 digs and Pope (13) and Webber (11) combined for 24 assists.
