WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Johnson scores 30 as Red Hawks run win streak to 11

KINSTON – Sophomore forward Sherry Johnson scored 30 points on Sunday – her second game of the week with that many points – as Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) ran its women’s basketball win streak to 11 games.

The visiting Red Hawks downed Lenoir Community College 78-41, improving to 19-3 overall and 13-1 in Region X.

CVCC led 20-11 after one quarter and held the Lancers to just five points in the second quarter to go ahead 36-16 at halftime.

The Red Hawks then scored at least 20 points in each of the third and fourth quarters and gave up just 25 second-half points.

Ivy Eller and Zharia Brown also reached double figures for CVCC, each scoring 13 points, and Aniya Taylor added 12 points.

Chrystall Jerome and Tammaria Smith led the Lancers with 11 points each.

CVCC is off until Friday, when it goes for a 12th straight win in a 6 p.m. home game against Guilford Tech.
