MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Off to best-ever start (8-1), CVCC home for Friday, Saturday games

HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC), off to its best start in school history at 8-1, has back-to-back home games just ahead.

On Friday, the Red Hawks battle Central Carolina Community College at 6 p.m. at the Tarlton Complex. The next day, they tip at 3 p.m. against Johnston Community College.

CVCC has won five straight since its only loss of the season, 68-63 at home against Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCC&TI).

The fifth straight win came Saturday, 81-63 at home over Lenoir Community College as sophomore forward Jordan Powell scored 22 points.

CVCC led Lenoir 32-28 at halftime.

The Red Hawks led 41-40 with 13 minutes, 32 seconds to go and came off a timeout to post a 14-0 run over a span of four minutes.

Lenoir (5-6, 2-4 in Region X) made a late run two 3-pointers by Brandon Kelson and Kristian Williams to get within four points. The Lancers made a dozen 3-pointers, including four by Kelson and three by Tyler Wilson.

Three-pointers by Byron Sanders, a freshman guard, and Zach De La Cruz helped CVCC stay in control.

Sanders scored a season-high 12 points and freshman guard Dezure Moulden added 11 points, nine of those in the opening half.

Kelson paced the Lancers with 17 points, while Jason Robinson added 16 points.
