WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: CVCC women’s next opponent is undefeated

HICKORY – With Wednesday night’s road game against Walters State called off, the Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) women’s next basketball game will be against an unbeaten team.

The Red Hawks – 6-1 overall and 2-1 in Region X after beating Fayetteville Tech 84-44 last Saturday in Hickory — meet Bryant & Stratton (Va.) College (9-0, 6-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Tarlton Complex.

Bryant & Stratton’s last win was Monday, 78-67 over Clinton College, and its only win margin fewer than 10 points was against Cape Fear Community College, 75-69.

CVCC has won five straight since falling 79-56 to Clinton College on Nov. 13 in Hickory.

Sophomore forward Sherry Johnson paced the Red Hawks with 29 points in the victory over Fayetteville Tech. It was her sixth straight game with 20 or more points.

CVCC led 34-30 at the half after making 19 turnovers.

The Red Hawks gained control by outscoring Fayetteville Tech 22-11 in the third quarter, spakred by six points in the quarter by Ivy Eller and four each by Johnson and Iyonna Harris.

Eller scored 16 points for the Red Hawks, while Zharia Brown scored 13.

Kiana Gravely scored 14 points to lead Fayetteville Tech (5-2, 4-2 in Region X).
