HICKORY – Career-best nights by Isayah Johnson and Jordan Powell sparked Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) to 103-85 home win in men’s basketball over Davidson County Community College (DCCC0 on Wednesday night.
Johnson, a sophomore forward from Charlotte (West Charlotte High) scored 29 points and Powell, a sophomore forward from Windsor, Conn., had 23 as the Red Hawks improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in Region X play at the Tarlton Complex.
CVCC goes for win No. 8 on Saturday at home as part of a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. with the CVCC women facing Fayetteville Tech. The Red Hawks and Lenoir Community College meet at 3 p.m.
Admission to both Saturday games is free.
After a back-and-forth first half against Davidson County (5-4, 0-3), the Red Hawks led 51-48 at halftime after Johnson had scored 14 points.
CVCC outscored Davidson County 52-37 in the second half, when Johnson and Powell had 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Montez Venable helped keep the Storm in the game, scoring a team-high 19 points that included making 11 of 15 free throws.
Davidson County converted 25 of 34 free throws.
