BANNER ELK — Behind 22 points from Zach De La Cruz and 20 points from Isayah Johnson, the Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) men rallied on Friday night to beat Lees-McRae College 94-81 in men’s basketball.
Visiting CVCC (4-1) trailed 46-44 in the first half when Johnson led the Red Hawks with 13 points.
De La Cruz and guard Dezure Moulden — who scored 13 and 12 second-half points, respectively — helped the Red Hawks outscore the Bobcats 50-35 in the second half.
CVCC was aided by shooting well at the free-throw line (31 of 36), with De La Cruz hitting nine of his 10 attempts.
Off to their best start since 2015-16, the Red Hawks are idle until next Sunday when they face the Limestone junior varsity in Gaffney, S.C., at 6:30 p.m.
