Catawba Valley Community College’s baseball team plays its final road conference series of this season this weekend, facing Guilford Tech.

The Red Hawks (26-19) play in Jamestown on Saturday – a nine-inning game that starts at 1 p.m. and then a seven-inning game – and the teams meet in a nine-inning game on Sunday at noon.

Spartanburg Methodist swept CVCC 6-0 in seven innings and 8-5 on Tuesday in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Pioneers used a four-run sixth inning to seize the lead late to earn a sweep.

Shortstop Joey Tepper led the late charge for Spartanburg Methodist (27-17) with a two-run home run in the sixth inning, his second of the game.

After falling behind 4-0 through three innings, CVCC surged ahead by scoring three runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning lead 5-4.

Outfielder Malik Stephens got the scoring going for CVCC in the fourth inning, driving in a run on an RBI double down the left field line. Before the inning was over, shortstop Jamie Sheek added an RBI sacrifice fly and second baseman Ryan Healy drove in a run on a single to cut the Red Hawks’ deficit to 4-3.

Back-to-back home runs by third baseman Grant Tilley and right fielder Vinny Consolo helped push CVCC ahead for the first time.

Tepper homered down the line in left for the tying and eventual game-winning runs in the sith inning for Spartanburg Methodist.

The Red Hawks committed five errors and had just one hit in the opening game.

Trent Jones had the only CVCC hit — a single to center field with one out in the top of the fifth inning. He reached base twice, the other time on an error in the third inning.

Spartanburg Methodist starting pitcher Charles Schaum went the distance to earn his second win of the season. He allowed one hit, two walks and struck out three and threw a complete game.

Tristan Shea led the Pioneers with a two-run single in the first inning, while Houston Wright, Andrew Krauss and Donald Hansis also drove in one run each for Spartanburg Methodist.
