COLLEGE BASEBALL: Red Hawks at 20 wins heading into weekend series at Patrick Henry

HICKORY – The hunt for all-time win No. 351 in baseball begins on Saturday for Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC).

The Red Hawks reached 350 wins for their program on Wednesday with a 9-2 win over Montreat College’s junior varsity in the first game of a doubleheader at the Legion Fairgrounds.

Montreat won the second game 4-1, leaving CVCC at 20-11 overall as it heads to Martinsville, Va., for a three-game series against Patrick Henry Community College.

The first game of the series is Saturday at 1 p.m., a nine-inning game, and Game 2 will then be played (seven innings) and a nine-inning game on Sunday at noon closes the series.

CVCC is ranked No. 17 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll.

Montreat JVs 4, CVCC 1

Two errors by the Red Hawks and timely hitting earned Montreat a split of a doubleheader at Henkel-Alley Field.

Montreat scored two runs in the fourth inning when Noah Medina reached on an error that also scored Erwing Hernandez, who led off the inning with a walk and stole second base.

The Cavs’ first hit came in the fourth inning, a double by Alejandro Gato that scored Medina.

CVCC had a runner on base in the fourth and fifth innings but did not score.

Montreat added two more runs in the sixth inning when Gato reached on an error that scored Medina and designated hitter Cody Colding singled to right field to score Gato.

CVCC’s only run score in the bottom of the seventh inning when pinch-hitter Jackson Brown drove in Tyler Campbell, who led off the inning with a walk.

Seth Bevans got a game-ending double play in the final inning. He allowed four hits, walked two and struck seven for Montreat.

CVCC 9, Montreat JVs 2

CVCC scored eight runs in the first three innings.

After Ethan MacDuffie’s singled gave the Cavs a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Red Hawks tied it in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Sabion Thomas.

CVCC scored four runs on two hits – one an RBI single by Rod Munoz – to go ahead in the second inning. Mason Lyda added a run-scoring sacrifiece fly, Cole Chapman scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch and Grant Tilly was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 5-1 lead.

An error helped Montreat get a run back in the third inning before CVCC added to its edge with a two-run double by Munoz and Brown’s RBI double.

CVCC starter Chris Banks and relief pitcher Myles White held Montreat at bay, allowing a combined seven hits, two runs (one earned), two walks and striking out 11. White (3-0), who replaced Banks in the fourth inning, earned a victory.

Chapman had a single in the sixth inning to drive in the Red Hawks’ final run.
