COLLEGE BASEBALL: With Catawba visiting on Friday, LRU needs win to climb to .500

HICKORY—Lenoir-Rhyne University has a chance to reach a .500 record when it starts a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) baseball series on Friday night at home against Catawba.

The Bears are 16-17 overall after beating Belmont Abbey College 11-5 on Wednesday night, edging the Crusaders for the third time in four non-conference games this season.

Through Thursday, LRU was 4-8 in the SAC, where Newberry, S.C. leads at 11-1, and in sixth place. Catawba, 12-3 in the SAC, shares second place with Lincoln Memorial.

The Bears and Indians play a doubleheader in Hickory on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.

LRU 11, Belmont Abbey 5

The Bears had 15 hits, three of them triples, en route to a home victory.

Will Jones, Alex Reynolds and Dalton Putnam each tripled for LRU while Hunter Jackson and Reynolds each had three hits.

Putnam’s triple drove in three runs and Reynolds and Grant Fuller each had two RBIs for the Bears.

LRU used eight pitchers with Matt Ranson (3-0) picking up a victory.

Ben Gobbel, Mason Dodd and Derrick Dabney each had two hits for the Crusaders, who had eight hits.

The teams combined to use 13 pitchers and neither started got to the fourth inning.
