LEGION BASEBALL: Rowan County, Cherryville defeat Hickory Post 48

Two early three-run innings sparked Rowan County’s 7-1 victory on Sunday over visiting Hickory in American Legion baseball.

Rowan County scored three times in the first inning and three times in the third inning for a 6-0 lead.

Outhit 9-4, Post 48 scored its only run in the sixth inning with an RBI from Luke Davis (Hickory).

Cameron Burleyson had two hits and drove in two runs and Zach McNeely added two hits for Rowan County.

Jade Blevins went six innings for Rowan County, allowing four hits, one run (earned) with three walks and four strikeouts.

Aiden Landrum (Fred T. Foard) had two hits for Hickory (2-5) with Josh Barkley (Hickory) and Blake Evans (Hickory) each adding one.

Barkley took the loss, going four innings. He gave up eight hits, seven runs (three earned), walked one and struck out three as the first of three pitchers called on by Post 48 head coach Allen Sigmon.

Hickory lost for the fourth time in five games.

Post 48 is at Shelby on Monday night (7 p.m.), at home on Wednesday night against Statesville (7 p.m.) and at home Friday for a doubleheader against Hendersonville that starts at 5 p.m.

Cherryville 18, Hickory 3, 5 inn. (Friday)

Visiting Cherryville cruised to a 9-1 lead through four innings at the Legion Fairgrounds and ended the game with nine runs in the fifth inning.

Cherryville led 18-1 and Post 48 scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Cherryville roll by outhitting Hickory 12-4, led by two hits each by Landon Jenkins, Cole Irby and Noah Pope and three RBIs by Taylor Cook.

William Weidner (East Burke), Zane Wilson (Newton-Conover), Hollis Morphis (Hickory Christian) and Jack McGhinnes (Hickory) each had a hit for Post 48.

Cherryville’s Noah Huss threw a four-hitter, allowing three runs (none earned) with one walk and six strikeouts.

Morphis was one four pitchers used by Post 48, working 3 1/3 innings as the starter. He allowed seven hits, nine runs (seven earned), walked five and struck two.

Cherryville doesn’t yet have a full roster with players Cherryville High, as the Ironmen won the West 1A title and face Perquimans in a best-of-3 championship series that begins on Friday night at 8 p.m. at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs.
