MINT HILL – Cy Spencer’s two RBIs and solid pitching by Josh Frye sparked another American Legion baseball victory for Maiden Post 240 on Wednesday night.
Playing Mint Hill Post 4059 at Independence High, the Salamanders won 4-1 to run their win streak to three, and they picked up their sixth victory in seven games.
Post 240 (12-3) is off on Thursday night after having played seven games in as many nights and next plays on Friday night against Hickory Post 48 at the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton (7 p.m.).
Maiden wiped out a 1-0 lead by Mint Hill with two runs in the top of the second inning and scored its other two runs in the seventh inning.
The Salamanders had five hits and Mint Hill had five hits.
Taylor Tibbs (Bluefield State) led Maiden with two hits and Ty Williams (Berea College), Spencer (Bandys) and Tyler Laws (Statesville Christian) each added one.
Spencer drove in two runs and Laws and Mac Beam (Bandys) each drove in run for the Salamanders.
Frye, who played prep baseball at Statesville Christian, went six innings to get a win. He gave up four hits, one run (earned), walked none and struck out three. He threw 62 pitches, 42 of them for strikes.
Maiden reliever Spencer Ledford (Bandys) picked up a save after pitching one inning. He threw strikes on 11 of his 19 pitches.
The Salamanders improved to 7-1 on the road this season and, after the game against Hickory, they will have six Area IV games left to play in the regular season.
Pineville visits Maiden for a doubleheader (6 p.m.) on Monday, Maiden goes to Wingate to play Union County on Wednesday (7 p.m.), Shelby visits Maiden on June 29 (7 p.m.), the Salamanders face Gastonia at Sims Park (7 p.m.) on June 30 and they are at home against Huntersville (7 p.m.) on July 4.
The Area IV playoffs are scheduled to begin on July 7.
Maiden plays in the East Division and based on current records, would likely be a No. 1 or No. 2 seed from the division.
