LEGION BASEBALL: Lincoln County scores 3 in final at-bat, beats Hickory for first win

NEWTON – Lincoln County’s Cardinals scored three runs off Hickory Post 48 closer Riley Edwards on Thursday to win an American Legion baseball game 3-1 at the Legion Fairgrounds.

Will Thornill pitched a complete game, holding Post 48 to four hits, as the Cardinals won for the first time in seven games.

Hickory (5-7) led 1-0 heading to the seventh inning behind five scoreless innings by Seth Moore.

Post 48’s run came in the third inning when Brody Scarborough’s single scored Kevin Shuford.

Hickory beat Lincoln County 7-5 on Tuesday night at East Lincoln.

Post 48 started 1-4, then won three straight games – over Taylorsville and a doubleheader sweep of Henderson County – to reach .500 at 4-4.

The next games for Hickory are Saturday with a 2 p.m. start at Henkel-Alley Field for a doubleheader against Burnsville.

Post 48 plays Mocksville in Newton on Sunday at 7 p.m. and Napoleon, Ohio, also at the Fairgrounds, at 7 p.m. on Monday.

After those games, Post 48 will have seven of its final 12 games at Henkel-Alley Field.

The Area IV regular season ends on July 4 and the playoffs are scheduled to begin on July 7.
