NEWTON – Bradley Fleenor made two big plays down the stretch on Friday night as Hickory Post 48 nipped Maiden 7-6 in nine innings in Area IV American Legion baseball.

Hickory won at the Legion Fairgrounds on a walk-off single by Pierson Hanvey (Hickory High) that scored Fleenor (Hickory), who led off the ninth inning with a walk.

Fleenor had an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to get Hickory (9-9) ahead 6-5, but the Salamanders (12-4) scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning to tie it at 6.

Carrington Chapman (Bunker Hill) picked up a win after pitching five innings for Post 48, which snapped a two-game win losing streak by winning. He allowed one run (unearned).

Chapman was the third Post 48 pitcher and gave up six hits, walked one and struck out five.

Mac Beam (Bandys) took the loss for Maiden, which had won three straight and seven of its last eight games coming in. He pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit, an unearned run, walking two and striking out. Beam replaced Spencer Ledford (Bandys), who went 4 2/3 innings and gave up two hits, a run, walked three and struck out two.

Hickory survived making eight errors and being outhit 10-8.

Luke Durham (Woodberry) had two hits to lead Hickory while Hanvey drove in three runs and Brody Scarborough (Hickory), Fleennor, Bryson Smith (Bunker Hill)and Kevin Shuford (Hickory) each had an RBI for Post 48.

Jay Sipe (Maiden), Josh Frye (Stateville Christian), Grayeson Brown (Maiden) and Jarrett Isaac (Maiden) each had two hits for the Salamanders. Frye, Isaac and Taylor Tibbs (Bluefield State) each drove in a run for Maiden.

Maiden lead 3-0 through one inning before Hickory scored twice in the bottom of the second and three runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 5-3 lead.

The Salamanders tied it 5-all with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, and Hickory went up by a run by scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Maiden had beaten Hickory 9-4 at Maiden High on May 31 in the first match-up of the season between the Catawba County rivals.

The victory gave Post 48 a 3-0 record in one-run games this season; Hickory beat Henderson County 3-2 and Mocksville 5-4 in games earlier this season.

Maiden dropped to 2-1 in one-run games this season after beating Union County 5-4 and Huntersville 3-2 in earlier games.

Hickory, playing in Area IV’s West Division, is off Saturday and plays a doubleheader on Sunday (4 p.m.) against Asheville at Asheville Roberson High.

The Salamanders, battling for an Area IV East Division title, have the weekend off after finishing a stretch of seven games in eight days (they went 6-2).

Maiden’s next game is Monday at Maiden High, a 6 p.m. doubleheader against Pineville Post 337.

Hickory and Maiden won’t play again this season unless it’s in the Area IV playoffs, scheduled to begin on July 7.
