NEWTON – Hickory Post 48, heading to the home stretch in a battle for an Area IV West Division title in American Legion baseball, will play eight games in nine days after a rainout.
Monday night’s Taylorsville at Hickory game at the Legion Fairgrounds was wiped out by bad weather and reset as part of a doubleheader Friday at Henkel-Alley Field. After playing Waverly, Ohio at 3 p.m. that day, Post 48 will face Taylorsville at 7 p.m.
The stretch of eight games in nine days begins on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. with a game against Area IV East Division leader Rutherford County at McNair Field. The same teams play Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Henkel-Alley Field.
After a day off on Thursday, Post 48 plays the Waverly-Taylorsville doubleheader on Saturday and goes to Shuey Field in Morganton on Saturday (7 p.m.) to play Burke County.
Hickory closes the regular season with a home game Sunday at 7 p.m. against Burke County, then plays host to Cherryville on Monday at 7 p.m. The regular-season finale is July 4 at Caldwell County.
The Legion playoffs are scheduled to begin on July 7.
Hickory is 10-10 overall and 6-3 in the West Division, currently in third place behind Rutherford County and Cherryville. Caldwell County and Asheville also have six wins in division play.
Hickory 10, Asheville 6 (Sunday)
Bryce Stober (Hickory) went 3-for-4, scored twice and drove in two runs as Post 48, playing at Asheville Roberson High, reached double-digit runs for the third time this season.
Bryson Smith (Bunker Hill) pitched six innings and picked up a win.
Asheville 8, Hickory 7 (Sunday)
Post 48 starter Pierson Hanvey (Hickory) had two hits and threw a complete game but a rally fell just short as Hickory suffered its 10th loss of the season.
Asheville scored seven runs in the fifth inning to go up 8-2 before Post 48 rallied in the final two innings to eventually strand the tying run at second base in the seventh inning.
