MAIDEN – Maiden Post 240 is inching closer to a showdown game with Shelby for first place in Area IV American Legion baseball after sweeping a home doubleheader over Pineville.
The Salamanders defeated Pineville in two five-inning games at Maiden High on Monday night, winning 8-5 and 7-4 when Jarrett Isaac had four hits and drove in three runs and Mac Beam added three hits and also drove in three runs.
Maiden is 14-4 overall and 12-2 in the Area IV East Division, just behind Shelby (12-1, 11-1) by win percentage (.916 to .857) after Shelby’s game on Monday at Kings Mountain was postponed by rain and reset for July 2.
The Salamanders play Union County at Wingate on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then play host to Shelby on Friday at 7 p.m.
Maiden downed Shelby 13-0 in five innings on June 2 in Shelby.
Post 240 has won eight of 10 games under head coach David Williams since coming back from an eight-day break from June 6 through June 13.

Beam (Bandys) drove in three runs in a first-game victory while Taylor Tibbs (Bluefield State) had two hits and two RBIs and Josh Frye (Statesville Christian) had three hits and drove in a run for Post 240.
Austin Hoyle (Maiden) went 3-for-3, Isaac (Maiden) added two hits and Grayeson Brown (Maiden) and Dylan Abernathy (Maiden) each drove in a run for the Salamanders.
Cy Spencer (Bandys) — throwing strikes on 57 of his 85 pitches — picked up a win for Maiden after throwing four innings. He gave up nine hits, five runs (all earned), walked two and struck out four.
Maiden had a 2-0 lead before Pineville, the home team in the opening game, scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Salamanders tied it at 5 with three runs in the second inning and scored three runs in the fifth inning as they overcame three errors to win.
Maiden had 14 hits and Pineville had 10.
Maiden 7, Pineville 4, 5 inn.
The Salamanders scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning, wiping out a 4-1 deficit, and won again despite making another three errors.
Pineville had five errors.
Isaac went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs to spark Maiden, Isaac went 2-for0-3 and Tibbs and Brown each drove in a run.
Jacob Cauble (Maiden) gained a victory in relief of Post 240 starter Bryson Ledford (Maiden). Ledford worked 2 2/3 innings, giving up three hits, four runs (none earned), walking two and striking out two. Cauble pitched 2 1/3 innings, throwing strikes on 17 of his 26 pitches. He gave up two hits and struck out two.
