MAIDEN – Reliever Elijah Carr pitched two shutout innings as Maiden Post 240 ran its win streak to two games on Wednesday night by edging visiting Lincoln County 3-2 in American Legion baseball.

Carr came on to scatter two hits, walk none and strike out three as the Salamanders (2-15, 2-12) won an Area IV East Division game.

Jacob Cauble was Maiden’s winning pitcher, going five innings. He gave us six hits, two runs, walked none and struck out two.

Maiden had seven hits and made no errors while Lincoln County had eight hits and made one error.

Both teams left six runners on base.

Cauble’s sacrifice fly scoring Ivan Huffman in the third inning put the Salamanders up 3-2.

Karson Williams took the loss for Lincoln County. He gave five hits and three runs, walked two and struck out three over three innings.

Jay Sipe had two hits for Maiden and Mac Beam provided a single and RBI.

For Lincoln County, Matt Jorgenson and Nathan Callahan each had two hits.

Maiden, which forfeited five wins, closes the regular season with a game against Pineville on Friday at 7 p.m. at Ardrey Kell High and a game on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Union County at Wingate.

The Area IV East standings through Tuesday’s games were: 1. Mint Hill 11-2; 2. Gaston Braves 10-3; 3. Gastonia 8-5, Lincoln County 8-5; 5. Union County 6-5; 6. Pineville 5-6; 7. Huntersville 4-8; 8. Cleveland County 2-9; 9. Maiden 1-12.

Maiden needs to finish eighth or better to get into the playoffs. If the Salamanders grabbed No. 8 in the East, they would face No. 1 West (currently Cherryville) in the first round. At No. 7, they would likely face the current No. 2 in the West (Asheville).

The pairings for the playoffs, scheduled to begin Tuesday, will be determined at an Area IV meeting on Monday in Cherryville.
