NEWTON – Newton-Conover High’s Shamar Baker is this week’s WNNC Oldies 101.3 FM Coca-Cola Golden Helmet Award winner, giving the Red Devils back-to-back award winners.

Baker, a 6-foot, 180-pound junior quarterback, won the Week 7 award after accounting for 306 yards of total offense as Newton-Conover beat Bandys 55-7 last Friday night at Bandys in a South Fork 2A football game.

He ran for 179 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 127 yards and two scores as the Red Devils (5-1, 2-0) scored on seven of their nine possessions in a win that left them sharing the league lead with East Lincoln and Maiden.

The award, in its 36th year, is presented each week after area head football coaches nominate players for consideration.

Newton-Conover running back Tylor Stinson won the award for Week 6.

The Red Devils’ next game is Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at home against West Lincoln.
