NEWTON – In a season of milestones, Bandys High senior running back Ethan Howard added another one on Tuesday – the 2018 Oldies 101.3 FM WNNC Coca-Cola Golden Helmet Player of the Year.

Howard has rushed 245 times for 1,985 yards to move 109 yards away from setting a school single-season record for rushing yardage.

Bandys (11-1) plays at home Friday at 7:30 p.m. against West Stokes (11-1) in the second round of the state 2AA playoffs.

Howard gained 220 yards on 24 carries and scored three TDs in a first-round 28-14 victory last Friday over Franklin at Bandys, setting the school record for career rushing yards (4,220).

When he broke a third-quarter run for 41 yards and a score, Howard passed the 4,067 yards gained by Chris Spade in 2003-04 at Bandys.

Tigers’ Siemer was Week 11 winner

Fred T. Foard running back Corey Siemer, a junior who ran for 410 yards and six TDs as the Tigers won at West Iredell, won the Golden Helmet Award for the second time this season (Week 11).

Siemer also won the award in the fifth week of the season.
