NEWTON — Ross Dant, who last season set two state swimming records for Discovery High, signed Tuesday to swim in college at N.C. State.

Dant — who plans to swim this year for Newton-Conover High – set state records last season in the boys’ 500-yard freeystyle and 100-yard backstroke. He was state champion in those events.

He also earned medals in the Junior Pan Pacific Games in Fiji last August (gold in 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle and bronze in 1,500 freestyle).

“I’m excited to be signing with N.C. State this year,” Dant said in a press release from the Newton-Conover City Schools.

Dant said he culture at N.C. State and the opportunity to potentially be an NCAA champion helped in his decision.

“It was the culture of the team and the actual school itself,” he said in the press release. “When I was choosing a program, I was looking for a program with the right mix of culture and high performance and the potential to be NCAA champions.”
