BOONE – Rob Sanders – whose 200 wins as head boys’ basketball coach at Watauga High is the most in school history — won’t be back for a 16th season.

The Pioneers announced on Tuesday they’ve started a search for a new head coach and that Sanders will remain at the school as a physical education teacher.

Sanders became head coach in 2004, following Bobby Jones as head coach, and exits with a 200-181 record that includes the Pioneers going 13-13 this season.

He surpassed a previous career win mark at Watauga (198) held by Carter Lentz.

Sanders’ exit leaves Ed Wills of Alexander Central as the longest tenured boys’ basketball coach in the Northwestern 3A-4A. He’ll enter his 16th year next season.
