CRAWDADS: Ride 12-run inning to win, now share first place

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Scoring a season-high for runs and getting 11 of them with two outs, the visiting Hickory Crawdads smashed Hagerstown (Md.) 16-4 on Monday night to gain a share of first place in the South Atlantic League (SAL) Northern Division.

Yohel Pozo had three hits and five other Crawdads had two each as Hickory used a 12-run second inning to overwhelm the Suns.

Hickory (48-59, 21-16 second half) shares first place with Hagerstown (58-46, 20-15), and there are two more games in the series – Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. and Wednesday at 10:35 a.m.

The Crawdads sent 16 batters to the plate in the second inning, getting their first run on a single by Richardo Valencia. They scored 10 runs with two outs, highlighted by a three-run home run (his fifth of the season) by Franklin Rollin, who had four RBIs.

Rollin, Blaine Prescott, Leody Taveras, Andretty Cordero and Anderson Tejeda each had two hits and Taveras, Cordero, Pozo and Tejeda each drove in two runs.

Hickory had 18 hits and was helped by the Suns’ three errors.

Leading 12-3, the Crawdads scored three runs in the fourth inning. Taveras drove in a run and the others scored on an error and a groundball out.

Hickory added its 11th two-were-out run in its seventh-inning run.

Even scoring 16 runs, the Crawdads left nine men on base. They were 9-of-22 with runners in scoring position.

Telmito Agustin went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Aldrem Corredor had two hits and an RBI and Jake Noll hit a solo home run in the second inning – his 13th of the year – for the Suns.

Crawdads starter Walker Weickel (3-3) grabbed a win, throwing five innings. He gave up four hits, three runs (all earned), walked none and struck out five.

The Suns’ Hayden Howard (4-1) was hit hard in 1 2/3 innings. He gave up seven hits, nine runs (none earned), walked one and struck out one.

Hickory improved to 25-29 on the road this season but still has the worst Northern Division record overall.

A crowd of 821 attended Monday night’s game.

After playing the next two nights in Hagerstown, the Crawdads come home for games against Lexington (Ky.) and Greensboro.

The Lexington series starts Thursday night at 7 p.m. Game times on Friday and Saturday are also 7 p.m., and the Sunday game is at 5 p.m.

Greensboro visits next week – Monday through Wednesday – with the first two games at 7 p.m. and the finale at noon.
