SOUTH FORK 2A ROUNDUP: Bandys nips W. Lincoln, will play for baseball tourney title

Winning for the fourth time in five games on Thursday night, Bandys High earned a chance to lock up a bid into the state baseball playoffs.

The fourth-seeded Trojans edged top-seeded West Lincoln 3-1 in a semifinal of the South Fork 2A tournament at the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton, beating the Rebels for the first time in three games this season.

Bandys (15-7) faces No. 2 seed North Lincoln (17-4) for the tournament title at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Fairgrounds. If the Trojans win, they will earn an automatic wild-card bid into the postseason.

Cy Spencer and Charlie Stybroski had run-scoring hits for Bandys against the Rebels (16-6). The Trojans scored two unearned runs and Spencer Ledford was the winning pitcher.

Brandon Lail went 2-for-3 for West Lincoln and Chris Moxley took the loss.

West Lincoln had wins of 5-3 at West Lincoln on March 26 and of 4-2 on April 18 at Bandys during the regular season.

North Lincoln downed sixth-seeded East Lincoln 12-9 on Thursday in the other semifinal.

West Lincoln and North Lincoln shared the South Fork 2A regular season title with North Lincoln – by making the tournament final – moving into the No. 1 2A playoff berth and West Lincoln gets No. 2.

If North Lincoln wins the conference tournament, Bandys will be the league’s No. 3 seed into the postseason and its overall winning percentage and MaxPreps rankings will play a role in whether or not it qualifies for the state playoffs as a wild card.

North Lincoln 12, East Lincoln 9

The Knights scored at least 10 runs for the seventh time this season, advancing to the South Fork 2A tournament title game with their 12th straight victory.

Joey Cobb was the winning pitcher for North Lincoln (17-4) at the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton.

No other game details were available.

The Knights, seeded second, face fourth-seeded Bandys for the title on Friday at 7 p.m.

Bandys knocked off top-seeded West Lincoln, which allowed North Lincoln to move into the No. 1 state 2A playoff bid by virtue of going deeper into the tournament than West Lincoln did.

Bandys 12, Lake Norman Charter 5 (Tuesday)

Spencer drove in four runs and Peyton Laney drove in three runs and was the winning pitcher as the Trojans won at home in the first round of the league tournament.

All nine players in the Bandys lineup scored at least one run, and the Trojans scored five runs in the second inning and seven runs in the sixth inning.

Laney worked 2 2/3 innings, giving up one hit, no runs, walking one and striking out one.

Max Doherty was 2-for-4 and hit a two-run home run and Logan Anstead went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Knights (11-12), who lost for the third time in five games.

Bandys beat Lake Norman Charter for the third time – the other wins were 4-3 on March 5 at Bandys and 8-1 at Lake Norman Charter on March 28.

East Lincoln 5, Maiden 3 (Tuesday)

The sixth-seeded Mustangs (11-11) stunned the third-seeded Blue Devils (10-10) at Maiden in the opening round of the South Fork 2A tournament.

Garrett Michel went 3-for-4 and scored twice and Allden Horne had two doubles and drove in two runs to lead East Lincoln.

Grayson Brown was 3-for-3 for Maiden with a double and two RBIs and Dylan Abernethy went 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run.

Jordan Fisher was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs and Ross Fowler took the loss for the Blue Devils.

East Lincoln beat Maiden 7-6 in eight innings on March 26 and Maiden won at home 6-3 on April 18.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lake Norman Charter 9, West Lincoln 0

The Knights completed a 14-0 regular season in the South Fork 2A with a victory on the road. They did not allow a goal during the league schedule.

Ayden Yates scored four goals and Olivia Haraldsson added two for Lake Norman Charter.

Reese Robinson added a goal on a penalty kick and Arabella Devoe and Haven Stanley also scored once for the Knights.

Haraldsson and Gabrielle Augier each had two assists and Yates and Peyton Lally added one each.

Lake Norman Charter had eight first-half goals and the other came in the first two minutes of the second half.

The match ended with the Knights’ ninth goal.

Lincolnton 5, Maiden 1

The Wolves won a South Fork 2A match at home, finishing 8-6-0 in the conference.

Rachel Morris scored for Maiden (8-6-0 in the league) and Brittny Cabalceta had an assist.

Lake Norman Charter 9, Bandys 0 (Tuesday)

Haraldsson had three goals in a home victory for Lake Norman Charter that also included a goal by Devoe, two by Kasey Hahn and one by Stanley.

Yates added two goals and two assists and Hahn provide to assists for the Knights.

Also scoring for Lake Norman Charter were Ally Smith, Aguier, Lauren Jones and Lindsay Rich.

Lake Norman Charter 7, North Lincoln 0 (Monday)

Yates scored the first goal for the host Knights three minutes into the league match on an assist by Hahn.

Yates scored again, on an assist by Haraldsson for a 2-0 lead before the same duo added another goal for a 3-0 lead.

Kirsten Brady’s penalty kick made it 4-0 and Yates scored unassisted for a 5-0 lead.

Haraldsson scored the last two goals, both on assists by Hahn.

Freshman goalie Marissa Sorvillo had one save for Lake Norman Charter.

Lake Norman Charter wraps up title (Monday)

The Knights shot 162, edging East Lincoln by two strokes in a nine-hole match at the Catawba Country Club, in the final South Fork 2A match of the season.

Bauer Galloway of West Lincoln and Drew Coppin of East Lincoln shared medalist with rounds of 36.

Carter Busse and Will Dalton led Lake Norman Charter with 40s.

Lance Rowe of East Lincoln, named league player of the year, finished at 337 to win the individual title by five strokes over Busse and Lake Norman Charter’s Ian John son (342).

Lake Norman Charter head coach Eric Johnson was named the conference coach of the year.
