MAIDEN – The South Fork 2A’s athletic directors met Friday morning in Maiden and made adjustments and revisions to the spring sports schedule that will be released next week.

The meeting came after the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) announced on Thursday suspension of all spring sports – practices, workouts and games – from Friday night until at least April 6 because of the coronavirus.

Gov. Roy Cooper has since ordered all public schools in the state closed for the next two weeks.

“We are in unprecedented territory here, and making decisions based upon information from the NCHSAA and our own local LEAs (school districts),” South Fork 2A executive secretary Butch Parker said in an email.

Parker indicated other steps may have to be taken later, as needed, as decisions are made by the NCHSAA and others.

The South Fork 2A traditionally plays a 14-game schedule in baseball, softball and girls soccer with each team having a home game.

There have been two playing dates in baseball and softball through Friday and six will be missed from now through April 3.

The conference girls soccer scheduled was set to begin Tuesday, with matches scheduled six times through April 6.

Boys tennis plays a seven-game schedule and eight league boys golf matches were scheduled and five girls and boys track and field events plus county championships (Catawba, Lincoln) and a South Fork 2A championship meet.

In tennis, the opening playing date was last Thursday and four dates will be missed under the NCHSAA order, leaving two before the regular season was to end.

In golf, five league matches are impacted and possibly a sixth (April 6).

In track and field, three conference meets are scheduled in the down time set by the NCHSAA.

The Northwestern Foothills 2A and Northwestern 3A-4A have not yet released any details or plans related to their conference schedules.
