HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS: Lincoln County schools lead All-South Fork 2A in baseball, softball

Five of the six top awards for South Fork 2A baseball and softball have been won by players and coaches from Lincoln County, conference officials announced.

In voting by league coaches:

— Chris Moxley of West Lincoln was selected as the Most Outstanding Defensive Player, Garrett Michel of East Lincoln won the Most Outstanding Player of offense and John Markley, who guided West Lincoln to a co-championship with North Lincoln, was named Coach of the Year.

— North Lincoln’s McKayla Watts was picked as the Most Outstanding Defensive Player in softball and her coach, Brenna Tapp, won Coach of the Year after leading the Knights to a conference championship. The Offensive Player of the Year award went to Jenna Carter of Lake Norman Charter.

Michel, a freshman, is hitting .458 with 17 doubles, two home runs and 19 RBIs for playoff-bound East Lincoln.

Watts, a junior, has made only three errors this season for North Lincoln, which starts the state playoffs at home Tuesday against league foe Bandys (7 p.m.) while Carter, a senior, hit .574 for Lake Norman Charter with four doubles, three triples, three home runs and an on-base percentage of .656.
