Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) will be the fourth-seeded team in the Region X Southeast District baseball tournament when it opens on Friday in Greenville, N.C., with four games.

The Red Hawks will face No. 5 seed Southeastern at 1 p.m. in the second game of a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) event that sends its winner to the World Series in Enid, Okla., on May 25-31.

Brunswick Community College is the top seed for a five-day tournament at the Pitt Community College Stadium, and the championship game is scheduled May 14.

CVCC (32-19) and 15-7 in Region X, had a record-setting pitching performance on its “Sophomore Day” on Sunday, beating visiting Fayetteville Tech 1-0 at the Fairgrounds in Newton.

Sophomore pitcher Logan Bender struck out a program-best 18 in that victory, allowing just one hit and one walk over eight innings.

Bender prevailed in a pitching duel with Tamiris Palmer, who allowed just two hits, walked four and struck out four.

The game was scoreless until the ninth inning when CVCC loaded the bases and scored when R.J. Conner drew a walk-off walk that scored pinch-runner Vinny Consolo.
