ROCK HILL, S.C. – Head football coaches in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) have modest expectations for Lenoir-Rhyne University in head coach Drew Cronic’s first season with the Bears.

In preseason voting by the league’s head coaches on Wednesday, they picked LRU to finish in sixth place in an eight-team league, ahead of only Limestone and Mars Hill.

Carson-Newman, with four first-place votes and 52 points, is the favorite to win the conference title. Wingate was picked to finish second, gaining three first-place votes and 49 points.

Tusculum gained the other first-place vote and is picked to finish fifth.

LRU, 3-7 overall and 2-5 last season to finish in sixth place last season under Mike Kellar, opens the season Aug. 30 at West Alabama.

Kellar was fired after his season season at LRU and the Bears hired Cronic, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Furman, as the new head coach in the first week of December.
