LENOIR – West Caldwell High’s girls will play their first game of the season next week in a holiday tournament at West Caldwell.

Because of injuries, the Warriors have not had enough varsity players to play any of the seven games the West Caldwell boys (7-0) have played this season.

MANGUM

West Caldwell athletic director Stephen McMasters said via email the Warriors expect to have two girls’ players soon receive medical clearance.

McMasters said West Caldwell’s girls will then play the rest of the games on their original schedule that includes 14 games in the Northwestern Foothills 2A.

The Warriors, coached by Brad Mangum, will play their first game on Dec. 27, facing Piedmont Community Charter in a first-round game of the West Caldwell Christmas Tournament at 3:30 p.m.

The tournament continues on Dec. 28, including a consolation and championship game in the girls’ bracket.

This is Mangum’s third year at West Caldwell, and the Warriors are 12-37 in those two seasons after going 7-17 overall and 3-11 last year in the Northwestern 3A-4A.

West Caldwell lost its last eight games last season.

Mangum, who also coached varsity girls’ basketball at Fred T. Foard and Alexander Central, has 114 career victories in seven seasons. He came to West Caldwell after working as an assistant coach on the Lenoir-Rhyne University women’s coaching staff.

The Warriors moved to the Northwestern Foothills 2A this year after the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) approved a request by West Caldwell to move from 3A to 2A because of dwindling enrollment since the last statewide realignment.
