WILMINGTON – Luke Little, head football coach at Freedom High the past two seasons, is the new leader at Wilmington Laney.
Laney officials announced Friday on Twitter they’ve hired Little to replace Ashaad Yeoman, who coached six seasons at his alma mater (31-38 record).
Little — a second generation head coach with stints at South Stanly and Whiteville before coming to Freedom — has an official career coaching record of 104-63.
The move puts Freedom back in the market for a head coach – the Patriots’ next hire will be their fifth in seven years, seventh since Tim McMahon left in 2005 after 11 years as head coach, and the 13th in school history.
Laney went 2-8 overall last season and 2-5 in the Mideastern 3A-4A, tying South Brunswick for sixth place.
Little guided Freedom to a 7-5 overall record and the Patriots tied Alexander Central and Hickory, all at 4-2, for second in the Northwestern 3A-4A.
Freedom went 9-3 in Little’s first season in Morganton, finishing 6-1 in league play and in second place
His records elsewhere as head coach at 35-30 in fie years at South Stanly and 53-25 in six years at Whiteville.
His father, Mark, coached 38 years before retiring. He was head coach at West Stanly (twice), Clarkton and Whiteville.
Luke Little was a star high school athlete at West Stanly, playing linebacker and running back. His college football career was cut short by an injury, and he played college baseball at Appalachian State.
