NORTHWESTERN FOOTHILLS 2A ROUNDUP: Foard wins baseball title, will be No. 1 seed in conference tournament

Fred T. Foard High is the No. 1 seed and gets a first-round bye when the Northwestern Foothills 2A baseball tournament opens on April 30.

The Tigers (13-2, 11-1) won the league title by one game over second-place Hibriten (14-5, 10-2) and will be at home in a tournament semifinal on May 2, facing No. 5 West Iredell or No. 4 Bunker Hill in a semifinal.

First-round games on April 30 are: No. 5 West Iredell at No. 4 Bunker Hill, No. 6 Draughn at No. 3 Patton and No. 7 East Burke at No. 2 Hibriten.

All tournament games are at the highest seed, including the championship game on May 3 at 7 p.m.

The current seedings are for the conference tournament only, and Foard and Hibriten already own the No. 1 and No. 2 state 3A playoff bids.

SOFTBALL

Top seed for conference tourney undecided

Complete pairings for the Northwestern Foothills 2A softball tournament, which starts on April 30, can’t be determined until Bunker Hill and Draughn play on April 29 at Draughn.

The Bears-Wildcats game was postponed on April 12.

Fred T. Foard finished 10-2 in league play and Draughn is 10-2 and Hibriten is 8-4 with Bunker Hill at 7-4.

The No. 1 team gets a first-round bye.

There will be four first-round games at the highest seeds on April 30, two semifinals at the highest seeds on May 2 and a title game on May 3 at the highest seed.

The only spots secured at this point are West Iredell as No. 5, East Burke as No. 6 and Patton as No. 7.

Bunker Hill 7, West Iredell 0 (Wednesday)

The Bears had a six-run fourth inning en route to a conference win on the road.

Payton Bryant allowed four hits, walked one and struck out 12 for Bunker Hill.

Camyrn Bryant went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, Danielle Brooks was 3-for-3 and scored twice, Alexis MaCrary doubled and had two hits and Kylleee Houser had a hit and walked twice for the Bears.

Bunker Hill 10, East Burke 0 (Monday)

Payton Bryant and Brooks combined on a four-hitter as the Bears won a league game at home in six innings.

Payton Bryant pitched five innings, allowing three hits and striking out seven, and Brooks gave up one hit and struck out two in one inning.

GIRLS SOCCER

Fred T. Foard 7, Draughn 0 (Wednesday)

Four goals by Abby Walker sparked the Tigers as they won a league match on the road.

Charity Crutchfield, Katie Tice and Ana Schmidt each scored a goal for Foard and Cameron Ekonomon had four assists.

Foard had a 22-8 edge in shots, 11-7 on shots on goal and 5-1 on corner kicks.

Ally Knisley made four saves and Alexis Woglemuth had three for the Tigers.

Magdolynn Reasoner had four saves for the Wildcats.

Hibriten 2, East Burke 0 (Wednesday)

The Panthers won by shutout in a home conference match on the road.

Hawkins had seven saves for East Burke.

Fred T. Foard 3, Hibriten 1 (Tuesday)

Abby Walker scored twice, Katie Tice added a goal and Alex Woglemuth had four saves as the Tigers won a conference match at home.

Phoebe Stainslaw scored for Hibriten.

Abagail Matthews, Tice and Ekonomon each had an assist for Foard.

East Burke 2, Bunker Hill 0 (Monday)

Brooke Arney and Alia Castrejon scored goals for the Cavs as they won a conference match on the road.

Jennifer Xiong and Andie McNeil each had an assist for East Burke.

Arianna Hawkins was in goal and made three saves for the Cavs.

BOYS GOLF

Draughn wins by 5 strokes at River Oaks (Monday)

Draughn shot 168 at River Oaks, winning a conference match by five strokes over Hibriten.

Maddox Whittington of Hibriten was medalist in a nine-hole event with a 38.

Noah Vance shot 41 to pace Draughn.
