NORTHWESTERN 3A-4A ROUNDUP: First 5 in Cougars’ order go 11-for-17 in softball victory

The first five batters in the Alexander Central High softball lineup combined to go 11-for-17 on Thursday as the Cougars reached six wins for the season by beating Canon-McMillan (Pa.) 11-5 in Taylorsville.

Lanie Goforth went 2-for-5, Alea Seagle was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Mattie Starnes went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Ashley Seagle was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Jasmine Parker went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the first five batting spots for the Cougars (6-3).

Alexander Central finished with 16 hits and Faith Carrigan (5-3) threw a complete game to gain a win. She threw seven innings, allowing nine hits, five runs (three earned) with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Cougars led 6-0 through three innings and scored three in the bottom of the fifth inning to stretch their lead to 10-4.

Elika Mowery, Lindsay Schmidt and Taylor Eckles each had two hits for Canon-McMillan, which had nine hits and made four errors.

Lauren Duke took the loss, going three innings. She gave up six hits, six runs (one earned), walked one and had no strikeouts.

Alexander Central plays a Northwestern 3A-4A game on Friday at 6 p.m. at Freedom.

Canon-McMillan continues its annual visit to the area with a Thursday 6 p.m. game at South Caldwell and a Friday 5 p.m. game at Fred T. Foard.

Bandys 8, St. Stephens 6

The Trojans had a five-run third inning en route to a road non-conference win that improved their record to 4-5.

Bailey Burton and Samantha Browning each drove in two runs for Bandys and Annie Andrews had two of the Trojans’ eight hits.

St. Stephens (1-7) had seven hits, two by Sophie Hainor, and Mayson Lail, Alyssa Howard and Lauren Moser each drove in a run for the Indians.

Freshman Laura Drum was the winning pitcher for Bandys, pitching four innings. She gave up four hits, four runs (two earned), walked four and struck out four.

Lail threw a complete game for the Indians, going six innings. She gave up eight runs (five earned) with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Bandys is at home on Friday at 6 p.m. to play East Lincoln in a South Fork 2A game while the Indians go to Boone on Friday (5 p.m.) for a Northwestern 3A-4A game against Watauga.

Alexander Central 15, Hickory 0, 4 inn. (Tuesday)

An eight-run first inning sparked the Cougars as they won a Northwestern 3A-4A game in Taylorsville.

Goforth went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, Alea Seagle, Parker, Chesney Stikeleather and Carrigan each added two hits and Alea Seagle, Stikeleather and Carrigan each drove in two runs for the Cougars.

Mikayla Hill had Hickory’s only hit.

Alexander Central had 15 hits and was aided by seven errors by the Red Tornadoes.

Carrigan walked one and struck out eight in four innings while Karissa Atapovich of Hickory gave up 15 hits, 15 runs (10 earned) with no walks or strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings.

Hickory’s next game is Friday at home at 4:30 p.m., a league game against McDowell.

Alexander Central 7, Ledford 2 (Saturday)

Ashley Seagle and Parker each drove in two runs and the Cougars won at home despite being outhit 14-2.

Chloe Evehart had three hits for Ledford.

Kara Hinkle got a win for Alexander Central after pitching six innings. She gave up 14 hits, two runs (both earned) with two strikeouts.

Sydnee Hillard pitched six innings for Ledford, allowing nine hits, seven runs (six earned) and she walked six and struck out six.

West Stokes 11, Alexander Central 7 (Saturday)

Faye Lawson went 3-for-5 with three RBIs as West Stokes won in Taylorsville.

West Stokes built a 6-0 lead by the top of the fourth inning and had five runs in the sixth inning to open its lead to 11-2.

Alea Seagle had three hits and Stikeleather added three hits for the Cougars, who had 13 hits but made six errors.

Carrigan took the loss, going 5 1/3 innings. She gave up 12 hits, 10 runs (four earned) with no walks and six strikeouts.

Allison Mabe threw a complete game for West Stokes, allowing 13 hits over seven innings. She allowed seven runs (five earned), walked one and struck out three.

BASEBALL

South Caldwell 9, Maiden 8

The Spartans won a non-conference game at home to stay undefeated (9-0) and snap Maiden’s win streak at five games.

Colby Collins pitched four innings to gain a win, allowing four hits and three runs and striking out seven.

Carlos Reynoso took the loss for Maiden (5-2), allowing 10 hits and nine earned runs over three innings.

Curtis Massagee, Ian Moretz and Clay Canale each had two hits for South Caldwell.

Reynoso had a double among his two hits and drove in two runs for the Blue Devils while Bain Sipe went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a run and Dylan Abernethy had two hits, walked and scored a run and Avery Scott had two hits for Maiden.

Maiden plays a South Fork 2A game at North Lincoln on Friday at 7 p.m., and the Spartans are at West Caldwell on Friday at 6 p.m. in a Northwestern 3A-4A game.

Lake Norman 13, Alexander Central 3

The Wildcats opened an 8-0 lead by the top of the fifth inning and downed the visiting Cougars, who fell to 5-5.

Leadoff hitter Cameron Arnold went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs for Lake Norman and Vance Anderson added two hits and drove in three runs.

The Cougars had five hits, tree by Dalton Stikeleather, and he and Easton Rhoney had RBIs.

Arnold hit a home run for Lake Norman.

Tristan Millsaps (0-2) took the loss for Alexander Central, going 4 1/3 innings. He gave up two hits, five runs (four earned) with five walks and six strikeouts.

Wildcats starter Rudd Ulrich gained a win after working four innings. He allowed one hit, no runs, walked two and struck out eight.

Alexander Central will play a Northwestern 3A-4A game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Freedom.

Bandys 14, St. Stephens 8

Elec Yount had a double among his two hits, walked once and drove in three runs as Bandys ran its win streak to three games with a road victory.

Sal Ferraro went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Charlie Stybroski had two hits and drove in two runs for Bandys (6-1), which scored more than 10 runs for the third straight game and for the fourth time this season.

Owen Van Sickle had a hit and two RBIs for the Indians (3-5).

Nick Andrews pitched four innings, allowing three hits, six runs (all earned) with five walks and four strikeouts to gain a win for Bandys.

Julien Pessell took the loss for St. Stephens, which dropped its fourth straight game and gave up a season-high 14 runs. He threw four innings, allowing 10 hits, eight runs (seven earned) with three walks and two strikeouts.

Bandys is at home Friday at 7 p.m for a South Fork 2A game against East Lincoln.

The Indians play a Northwestern 3A-4A game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Watauga.

West Caldwell 13, Draughn 1, 5 inn.

Jordan Bowman had two hits and drove in three runs and Nick Kidd allowed only two hits as the Warriors (3-5) won a non-league game at home.

Kidd went five innings, giving up one run (unearned), walking five and striking out three as West Caldwell improved to 2-3 at home this season.

The Warriors are at home Friday at 6 p.m., facing South Caldwell in a Northwestern 3A-4A game.

Draughn (2-7) will be at home Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Hibriten in a Northwestern Foothills 2A game.

McDowell 10, Mitchell County 0, 5 inn.

Gage Gentry went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs to lead the Titans to a five-inning non-league win at home.

Sophomore Chapel Matson gained a win, pitching 3 1/3 innings and giving up one hit, no runs, walking one and striking out three.

Mitchell County had two hits with Cole Gillespie, pitching in relief, touched for five hits, seven runs (five earned) with one walk and one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.

McDowell (5-4) plays at Hickory on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in a league game.

Alexander Central 8, Hickory 1 (Tuesday)

Bryson Hammer (2-1) struck out 14 over six innings and Dawson Elder had two hits and four RBIs as the Cougars won a Northwestern 3A-4A game at home.

Alexander Central scored three runs in the first inning and led 4-1 through three innings before adding four runs in the fifth inning.

The Cougars had nine hits – two by Bryon Younts, Jacob Bebber and Elder – and Younts added two RBIs.

Hammer and reliever Jeremy Simpson checked Hickory (3-5, 0-5) on two hits, one by Bryce Stober and one by Grayson Lineberger.

The Red Tornadoes made three errors and starter Zach Smith lasted just one inning (four hits, four runs, all earned, with one walk.

Hickory’s next game is Friday, a 6:30 p.m. conference battle with McDowell in Hickory.

GIRLS SOCCER

St. Stephens 5, Maiden 1

Rachel Morris scored Maiden’s only goal and Marley Mingus made seven saves in a non-conference loss at St. Stephens.

The Indians have a Northwestern 3A-4A match at Watauga on Friday at 5 p.m.

Maiden battles North Lincoln at Maiden on Thursday in a South Fork 2A match.
