WELLS FARGO CUPS: E. Lincoln, Hibriten, Hickory best in area conferences

CHAPEL HILL – East Lincoln, Hibriten and Hickory won close races to capture Wells Fargo Conference Cups.

The cups go to the top athletic program in each of the state’s conferences with each league determining its scoring method.

East Lincoln won the South Fork 2A with 121 points, 12 ahead of second-place North Lincoln.

Hibriten had 765 points to win the Northwestern Foothills 2A with Fred T. Foard next at 757 ½ points.

In the Northwestern 3A-4A, Hickory had 129 points to finish a half-point ahead of Watauga.

East Lincoln’s win was led by conference titles in girls’ tennis, boys’ soccer, volleyball, baseball and softball.

Hibriten landed six titles in the Northwestern Foothills 2A – football, girls’ tennis, boys’ soccer, girls’ swimming and diving, softball and girls’ track and field.

Hickory won league titles in boys’ basketball, boys’ tennis, girls’ soccer and shared a boys’ soccer title.

The award has been sponsored by Wells Fargo and prior to that by Wachovia since 1980.
