HIGH SCHOOLS: E. Lincoln, Patton, Watauga win Wells Fargo Conference Cups

CHAPEL HILL – East Lincoln, Patton and Watauga have won 2019-2002 Wells Fargo Conference Cup Championships from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA).

The Cup is annually presented to schools that have the top athletic programs in a conference and each league determined its method of earning points.

Wachovia, and now Wells Fargo, has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

The NCHSAA also awards a Wells Fargo Cup, which is based on state finishes by schools and it includes points awarded for qualifying and advancing in the state playoffs.

Patton finished 17.5 points ahead of Fred T. Foard in the Northwestern Foothills 2A with East Lincoln on top of the South Fork 2A by seven points over North Lincoln.

In the Northwestern 3A-4A, Watauga had 139 points with Hickory next at 127.

Lincoln Charter finished second in the Southern Piedmont 1A, three points behind Thomas Jefferson.

1) Patton – 472.5; 2) Fred T. Foard – 455; 3) E. Burke – 425; 4) Draughn – 420; 5) Hibriten – 410; 6) W. Iredell – 350; 7) Bunker Hill – 277.5; 8) W. Caldwell – 245.

South Fork 2A

1) E. Lincoln – 83; 2) N. Lincoln – 76; 3) Lake Norman Charter – 75; 4) Newton-Conover – 68; 5) Maiden – 51; 6) W. Lincoln – 46; 7) Lincolnton – 38; 8) Bandys – 35.

Northwestern 3A-4A

1) Watauga – 139; 2) Hickory- 127; 3) Freedom – 113; 4) Alexander Central – 110.5; 5) St. Stephens – 109; 6) S. Caldwell – 107.5; 7) McDowell – 88.

Southern Piedmont 1A

1) Thomas Jefferson Classical – 163; 2) Lincoln Charter – 160; 3) Highland Tech – 154; 4) Christ the King – 129; 5) Cherryville – 109; 6) Bessemer City – 95; 7) Piedmont Community Charter – 77.
