HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Salisbury (2AA), Mount Tabor (3AA) win state titles (summaries)

Salisbury and Mount Tabor won state varsity football championships on Thursday night.

Salisbury, the No. 7 seed from the West, defeated East No. 2 seed St. Pauls 42-14 at N.C. State for a 2AA title.

The Hornets finished a COVID-shortened season at 9-2, and St. Pauls finished 8-1.

Salisbury won 52-12 at Maiden in the first round en route to its state title, also beating Burns 10-7 on the road and North Davidson 24-21 in Welcome to reach the championship game.

In 3AA, West No. 2 seed Mount Tabor beat East No. 1 seed Cleveland 24-16 at North Carolina.

Mount Tabor finished 11-0 and Cleveland finished 10-1.

Mount Tabor’s first-round win was at Alexander Central, and wins over Weddington (21-10 at home) and at home over Greensboro Dudley (24-20) earned a bid in the state title game.
