BOWIE, Md. – Hunter Harvey threw in a regular-season game for the first this season on Saturday, going two innings for Class AA Bowie (Md.).
Bowie eventually beat Harrisburg (Penn.) 15-6 – scoring nine runs in the ninth inning – after Harvey, a former star right-hander at Bandys High, had long ago hit the showers.
Harvey — assigned to Bowie out of spring training and then called up to the Baltimore Orioles for two days before being optioned back to Bowie — gave up two hits, one run (earned), walked none and struck out one before exiting.
The Baysox used three other pitchers after Harvey, who is working his way back from injuries (including Tommy John surgery on his pitching arm) that limited his innings over the past few seasons.
Harvey, who is on the 40-man roster for the Orioles, is in the Bowie starting pitching rotation. He was assigned to Class AA after flirting with making the Orioles out of spring training because of his solid starts against big league teams.
He was called up on Monday night, when Toronto visited Baltimore, and was in the bullpen but didn’t get into that night’s game or a game against the Blue Jays the next night.
Harvey was optioned back to Bowie the next day – when the Orioles brought up an infielder – and he took the mound for the first time on Saturday.
