MARION – Darrell Brewer, who last coached football in 2015 at Avery County High, is taking over as the new head coach at McDowell High.
Brewer replaces Andy Morgan, who resigned May 17 at three seasons at McDowell.
The Titans went 11-24 under Morgan. He left to become an assistant coach at A.C. Reynolds.
Approval of a teaching contract for Brewer came at Monday night’s meeting of the McDowell County Board of Education.
Brewer had a record of 68-71 at Avery County as head coach from 2004 through 2015. All of his teams made the state 1A playoffs and two of them got as far as the third round.
One of Brewer’s best years at Avery County was 2005 when the Vikings won a Western Highlands Conference title and went 11-3 and set a school record for single-season wins.
Brewer served as an assistant coach on the 2014 North Carolina Shrine Bowl team and he has also been an assistant in the East-West All-Star Game in Greensboro.
McDowell went 4-8 last season, advancing to the state 4A playoffs.
Brewer is the seventh head coach for the Titans since 1982 (see graphic) and will be the only new head coach next season in the Northwestern 3A-4A.
West Caldwell also has a new head coach – Mike Biggerstaff – but moves out of the Northwestern 3A-4A and into the Northwestern Foothills 2A in August, a move requested and approved by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) because of a decline in enrollment.
